Twenty years ago this summer, Dr. Moore made getting the best care easier for Louisiana families. She established St. Jude Baton Rouge Affiliate Clinic at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health, a satellite clinic where patients receive St. Jude’s unmatched protocols but much closer to home.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis is respected around the world for providing the most advanced care, treatment and hope for children with cancer and blood-borne illness.

Each year about 175,000 children below the age of 15 worldwide are diagnosed with cancer. It’s the leading cause of death past infancy among children in the United States.

St. Jude has long been a pioneer and leader in pediatric cancer and hematology care. Families make their way to Tennessee life-saving care often unavailable in their own communities. Recognizing the burden many families face, St. Jude began partnering with hospitals to establish satellite clinics. There, patients receive follow-up treatment coordinated by and in close collaboration with the medical staff in Tennessee.

In 1998, St. Jude Baton Rouge Affiliate Clinic opened at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. It is one of only eight such clinics and has a staff of 20, including three physician specialists.

“It’s humbling to think of how far this clinic has come in 20 years and how many lives our team has touched in that time,” said Sheila Moore, MD, pediatric oncologist and founder of the satellite clinic.

Last year alone, St. Jude Baton Rouge Affiliate saw patients on 2,300 appointments.

When the freestanding Children’s Hospital opens in October, the St. Jude clinic will be even larger with its own floor.

“It’s incredibly exciting to think of its future,” Dr. Moore said. “We treat patients from all across Louisiana, and to know that the changes to come will improve the care they receive and the ease at which they are able to receive it, it’s a win for everyone. I thank God that I am able to leave our clinic as a legacy for future children in Louisiana.”
