Understanding How Quality is Measured

Hospital care quality is an objective measure applied to hospitals nationwide by the Independent Institute of Medicine. The organization measures universally accepted metrics and principles of care and recognizes outstanding performance in six key areas:

  • Effectiveness
  • Safety
  • Efficiency
  • Patient-centeredness
  • Equitability
  • Timeliness

Standard and accepted measurements of quality care include using evidence-based best practices, mortality (death rates), hospital readmissions (preventable returns to the hospital within 30 days of discharge) and complications.
