The orthopedics team at Our Lady of the Lake is achieving outstanding results for patients who receive total hip replacement surgery, an often life-changing treatment for patients with arthritis.

Arthritic disease is the most common cause of disability in the United States and affects 21 percent of the population. Patients who progress to end-stage hip degenerative disease of the hip or knee often endure excruciating pain completing the simplest daily tasks. Our Lady of the Lake surgeons performed 453 total hip replacements in 2018. Among those, only two had a hip infection.

Additionally, Our Lady of the Lake is one of 35 hospitals nationwide participating in a program called Operation Walk USA. The program enables orthopedic surgeons to perform hip and other joint replacement surgeries to improve the quality of life of uninsured patients with debilitating arthritis. The program has helped 762 patients nationwide since its inception with donated medical services totaling $20.5 million.
