Academic Affairs

Welcome to Our Lady of the Lake Division of Academic Affairs. We are happy to have you join us for your medical education training and take great pride in being a part of your professional development as a physician. We know that you will help continue the standards of excellence in patient care, teaching, and research established by your programs.

As you explore our website, I hope that you will discover useful information on the graduate medical education programs that train at Our Lady of the Lake and the institutional support provided by the Division of Academic Affairs. The Division's infrastructure has been carefully developed to provide our residents, fellows, medical students and faculty all the resources necessary to be successful.

The Division is comprised of the following departments:

Graduate Medical Education
Our Lady of the Lake serves as a clinical teaching site for 21 residency programs including Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Tulane University School of Medicine, and Our Lady of the Lake-specific programs covering nearly all specialties and subspecialties of medicine. Student rotations are also offered and encouraged through many of the residency programs.

In April 2015, Our Lady of the Lake was on the national stage as our Graduate Medical Education team earned two prestigious awards recently. The Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers (AIAMC) selected Our Lady of the Lake as the winner of the AIAMC Innovation Award

The specific project captured GME’s implementation of text message reminders for faculty participating in patient safety rounds. Deceptively simple and highly effective and we have already been contacted to share this concept with others. More than 140 residents and 30 faculty participated in the project that was selected. The programs participating were the OLOL Pediatrics, LSU-OLOL Psychiatry, LSU Internal Medicine, LSU Emergency Medicine, and LSU General Surgery.

After an extensive review process by the selection committee comprised of numerous representatives from 21 partnering organizations in health care and education, including a series of site visits to the semi-finalists, the following ACGME-accredited institutions were invited to participate in the first phase of Pursuing Excellence:

  • Children’s National Medical Center, Washington,
  • Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH
  • Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME
  • Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge, LA
  • Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY
  • The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, Austin, TX
  • University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, San Francisco, CA

“The proposals we received demonstrate the remarkable capacity of the GME community to do great work, and the Pathway Innovators have an exciting opportunity to innovate and share learnings across the community,” said Kevin B. Weiss, MD, Senior Vice President, Institutional Accreditation, ACGME. “The ACGME and its partners look forward to collaborating with each of the institutions as they drive change that impacts learners, practitioners and professionals across the clinical learning environment.
