PGY2 Critical Care Residency

PGY2 Critical Care Residency Purpose Statement

Our Lady of the Lake is one of the largest private medical centers in Louisiana. In a given year, we serve more than 35,000 patients in the hospital and 650,000 outpatients. We hold the designation of a level-three accredited Chest Pain Center and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence and were honored with the 2015 ICU Design Citation Award. In addition, we are the area's only Level II Trauma Center and are recognized as a Primary Stroke Center. We also have a free-standing Children's Hospital with a neonatal ICU and pediatric ICU.

The PGY-2 Critical Care Residency Program at Our Lady of the Lake will prepare residents to become competent critical care pharmacy specialists with exposure to a wide variety of critically ill patient populations. Residents will have opportunities to function independently as a practitioner to provide improved patient outcomes and assist in quality improvement initiatives for the institution. Duties will include but are not limited to: a longitudinal research project, formal presentations, in-services, medication use evaluations, drug monographs, precepting of pharmacy students and PGY-1 residents, and medication safety management. The resident will provide care for patients in the following intensive care settings: medical, surgical, cardiovascular, trauma, neuroscience, pediatric, and neonatal. Residents will also gain experience in emergency medicine, infectious disease, and nutrition support.

The PGY-2 Critical Care program is a 12-month learning experience dedicated to:

  • Improvement of the medication use process
  • Provision of evidence-based patient-centered medication therapy management in multidisciplinary critical care settings
  • Leadership and practice management development
  • Enhancement of medication safety and therapeutic outcomes
  • Development of sustainable pharmacy practice and educational models
