Nissen Fundoplication

If lifestyle changes and medications have not been effective in managing your gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), your doctor might recommend Nissen fundoplication as an alternative treatment.

What Is Nissen Fundoplication?

During this laparoscopic procedure, a surgeon will make several small incisions. Using thin cameras and devices, the surgeon will take the top curve of the stomach (the fundus), wrap it around the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and stitch it into place. This strengthens the LES and prevents acid from traveling out of the stomach.
